Art Director/Production Manager
November 2001 - August 2003
In 2001, City Pages co-founders Tom Bartel and Kristin Henning began developing a New Yorker-style magazine that launched in March 2002. I joined the staff in November 2001 as the art director and production manager. Initial duties included designing the Rake logo, editorial layouts, collateral pieces (business cards, etc.) and a four-page introductory guide for the sales team.
Ongoing tasks included designing the monthly cover and editorial content, assigning photographers and illustrators, and uploading the pieces to rakemag.com. As production manager, I oversaw a part-time assistant, designed spec ads and web advertisements, and conducted press checks. The Rake ceased publication in 2008, but in 2012 the archives were resurrected.
